Here are the pros and cons of living in a homeowners association.
I’ve been hearing from a lot of clients about homeowners associations, which can be a real firestorm for some. Is living in a homeowners association a bad thing or a good thing? The truth is that it depends on your situation and what you want from where you live.
One of the pros of an HOA is that there’s usually more uniformity in your subdivision. There are typically restrictions that say how big of a house can be built and what you can and can’t upgrade. That does tend to protect property values, as well as provide more social interaction with neighbors than without an HOA. Another pro is the services provided by a specific HOA, which can include things like lawn service, a community pool, and more.

As far as the cons go, the big one is that an HOA is going to tell you what you can and can’t do to your home. If you don’t like being bossed around like that, an HOA is probably not right for you. There are rules and restrictions that you will be legally bound to if you buy a home in the neighborhood. You’ll also have to pay dues, whether it be monthly, quarterly, or annually.
Whether you do or do not want to live in an HOA, make sure your agent is aware of your preference. If you have any questions for me or any real estate needs that I can assist with, don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
